Problem
The Children’s Sailing Trust (CST) run water based activities on Trevassack Lake, a flooded quarry on the Lizard Peninsula (not far from our yard in Penryn). As part of a planned redevelopment of the southern shore of the lake (which is only accessible by water) the CST needed to transport approx. 50 tonnes of plant, machinery, and building materials across the lake.
Solution
ScaffFloat proposed an 8×6.4m pontoon as the most appropriate vessel for the task. A stability assessment was carried out to guide the loading plan, and the pontoon was built on a small beach on the northern shore of the lake, from where it was slid into the water on completion. ScaffFloat also provided ramps to allow tracked plant to load materials and equipment to/from the pontoon on both sides of the lake, and assisted the CST to propel the pontoon across the lake using the CST’s electrically powered safety boat. With a pontoon payload of 5.5tn multiple journeys were required to transport the plant and materials across the lake. On completion of the work everything was returned to the north shore using the ScaffFloat pontoon, which was then demobilised and returned to the ScaffFloat yard.
