Canvey Island

PROBLEM
— An oil storage facility on the lower Thames needed to carry out a concrete survey of the beams under one of its pier heads.
— Access was a significant challenge, the pile pattern was very close and it was exposed to waves and wash from passing vessels.

SOLUTION
— We provided an 8m x 4m ScaffFloat powered by 2 x 60hp hight thrust outboards. With separate fuel and batteries this gave good safety redundancy in this location.
— We used the engines to ‘push on’ to hold position and an adjustable platform to provide the surveyor with access as the tide rose and fell.
— It was fully licensed as a vessel by the PLA.
— The works were carried out over the course of three weeks and all the sample targets were achieved.

“A Post-tensioned Special Inspection that we were delighted to undertake earlier this year. Our clients, which run a petrochemical storage facility, needed confirmation that their asset was not at risk of sudden structural failure. Thanks to Toby Budd of ScaffFloat and Skipper Joe for all their help with access on this challenging project.”
