Floating Bridge Lift – Penwhapple

Problem

Beaver Bridges Ltd approached us to assist with the removal and replacement of the tower footbridge at Penwhapple Reservoir in Scotland, and also to install a temporary pontoon walkway to give access to the tower while the bridge was being replaced.

Solution

First we installed a 32 x 2.4m walkway to give access to the tower. We then mobilised a 12 x 6.4m heavy lift pontoon which was floated under the bridge using work boats and lines. Using a custom bridge jacking frame that we designed and fabricated, we jacked up the existing steel bridge front the pontoon and winched it across the reservoir to an area where it could be  lifted off with a crane. We then ran the process in reverse to install the new GRP bridge.
